It would be good… to get to know and understand each other better

These words came to mind after talking with a group of musician friends about a music festival, we wanted to create in Chiang Mai. A few questions kept coming up week after week in our meetings..

What are we doing this for? What is our city in need of right now? And with our skills as musicians, what can we do? How can we help? How far can we help?

And the answers from the group have been that we want to use music as a way to communicate about the environmental problems of the city that we are all facing… toxic haze, heat, polluted water and plastic waste.

We recognized the importance of cultural diversity, and finally one of us mentioned ‘children and teenagers’. He talked about the problem of inequality in education and opportunities to study. If there were to be a music festival in the city (or some kind of project in the city) our youth should be involved and have the opportunity to learn along with us.

And that is our vision, a vision that will determine the direction of this music festival. A music festival that will speak about and reflect environmental issues, giving importance to diversity, and which will help drive change in children and young people’s education. A music festival to be called the ‘Chiang Mai Street Jazz Festival’

Someone once said, “Walls, whether high or low… are walls”

We are coming together at this time to cross walls and create understanding, to pin down a music festival of friendship, to join in the environmental protection of the city we love, to creatively share in celebrating our diversity. And we believe that things will get better if we get to know and understand each other better.

city of music

“An annual Chiang Mai music festival by the people of Chiang Mai for the world”

Time after time people talks of Chiang Mai as a city with an old and beautiful culture, a city of ethnic diversity, a city of creativity or as a city with the rich natural beauty surrounding a modern urban society. But there is another dimension that many people overlook, that Chiang Mai is internationally recognized as a “City of Music”.

720 years history

The diversity of cultures that have circulated through the city over more than 720 years has been the impetus for its people to create art in order to sustain their lives, and one of these arts has been music, both folk, ethnic and contemporary music. All have uniquely intermingled in the progress of the people’s lives. This impressive harmony is not easily found in other cities, but has happened here in Chiang Mai.

This long-founded way of life of the city has made the people here open and adaptable to the influence of external cultures, including to jazz, which has been integrated into the forms of music and entertainment which Chiang Mai people accept and relate to in their lives.

street culture

“Street” describes an often overlooked and ignored the dimension of culture. From this perspective, we want to make use of our knowledge and ability in music to promote and support the environment, nature, human potential, arts, culture and the education of the coming generations in order to play our part in creating a stable and long-lasting future for Chiang Mai in which no-one is left behind.
